Information for Parents and Carers
As students progress into Years 10 and 11, they begin the final phase of their compulsory education. The Year 9 Options process ensures each student follows a curriculum that is both broad and personalised, preparing them for post-16 education, training or employment.
We work closely with students and families to support informed, realistic, and aspirational subject choices.
The Options Process
During Year 9, students are supported to consider their strengths, interests, and future goals. They receive guidance through assemblies, lessons, and discussions with staff.
Parents and carers are encouraged to talk through options at home and to contact the school if further advice or clarification is needed.
From September 2026, students will:
- Study a core curriculum followed by all students
- Choose two option subjects, studied across Years 10 and 11
- Choose one Level 1 course, completed over one academic year
Please note that some courses may not run where numbers are insufficient. Where courses are oversubscribed, decisions will be made based on suitability and individual needs.
GCSEs and Assessment
GCSEs are now graded on a 9–1 scale, replacing the previous A*–G system.
- Grade 9 is the highest grade
- Grade 4 is considered a standard pass
Most GCSE subjects now place greater emphasis on final examinations, with reduced coursework. Students are supported throughout Key Stage 4 to develop exam technique, subject knowledge, and independent learning skills.
Core Subjects
All students follow a balanced core curriculum in Years 10 and 11, which includes:
- English – GCSE English Language in Year 10, with some students also completing GCSE English Literature
- Mathematics – GCSE Maths, with Functional Skills support where appropriate
- Science – GCSE Science qualification in Year 11
- Core Physical Education – a non-examined PE programme to support health and wellbeing
Students who do not achieve a grade 4 in English or Maths may need to re-sit these qualifications post-16, particularly when progressing to college or training.
Option Subjects
Students choose from a carefully selected range of option subjects, designed to meet different learning styles and interests.
Art & Design
A creative, practical course exploring a range of materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, printing and textiles. Students build skills through coursework and complete a final exam project.
Progression and careers: Art and Design courses at Level 2 and 3, graphic design, illustration, fashion and creative industries.
Hospitality and Catering
A hands-on course focused on cooking, food preparation, nutrition, and kitchen safety. Students combine practical lessons with written tasks.
Progression and careers: Professional cookery courses, hospitality roles, catering apprenticeships.
3D Design
A workshop-based course where students design and manufacture products using a variety of materials. Emphasis is placed on practical problem-solving and evaluating design ideas.
Progression and careers: Product design, construction, engineering, and manufacturing pathways.
BTEC Sport
A practical, coursework-based qualification covering fitness, performance, coaching and leadership.
Progression and careers: Sport and fitness courses, coaching, sport development and related roles.
GCSE History or Classical Civilisations
An exam-based course developing literacy, reasoning, and critical thinking through the study of past societies and events. Allocation is made by the school.
Progression and careers: A Levels, humanities courses, law, teaching, and journalism.
Level 1 Courses
All students also choose one Level 1 course, completed within one academic year. These courses focus on practical skills, personal development and preparation for post-16 pathways.
Available courses include:
- Sports Leaders Award – leadership, teamwork and communication through sport
- ASDAN – life skills, independence and preparation for work or college
- Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – nationally recognised programme developing resilience, commitment and teamwork
- Interactive Media – practical digital projects such as graphics and media design
- Photography – camera skills, editing and portfolio work
- Animal Care – animal welfare, handling and care routines
- Arts Award – creative exploration across art, music, drama and media
- Health and Social Care – introduction to care settings and communication skills
- E-Sports – understanding teamwork, events and careers within the digital and gaming industries
- Mechanics – hands-on mechanical skills using tools and basic systems
These qualifications are assessed primarily through coursework and practical evidence and support progression to Level 2 courses, college programmes or apprenticeships.
