Positive Behaviour Support Plans (PBSP)

At Millgate School, every student has a Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP). These plans are an important part of how we support each child to feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.

A PBSP is a personalised plan designed to reflect each student’s individual needs. It helps staff understand how best to support a student throughout the school day, particularly at times when they may feel overwhelmed or dysregulated.

Our plans focus on:

  • Understanding what helps each student feel calm, safe, and supported
  • Identifying early signs that a student may be becoming dysregulated
  • Providing clear strategies for staff to respond consistently and effectively
  • Supporting students with their emotional wellbeing
  • Helping students develop the right mindset for learning
  • Highlighting what works well for each student, as well as what may not be helpful

PBSPs are closely linked to our Zones of Regulation approach, which helps students recognise, understand, and manage their emotions. Through this, students are supported to build self-awareness and develop strategies to regulate their feelings.

Student voice is a key part of every plan. We ensure that students are listened to and that their views help shape the support they receive.

All PBSPs are:

  • Reviewed and updated every 6 weeks (or sooner if needed)
  • Shared with all staff working with the student
  • Shared with parents and carers
  • Discussed with the student in a way that is appropriate and meaningful to them

By working together, these plans help create a consistent and supportive environment where every student can succeed.
