Pastoral Support at Millgate School
At Millgate School, we understand that children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and understood. That is why pastoral support is at the heart of everything we do.
Each class group has a dedicated Pastoral Teaching Assistant attached to it. Their role is to build positive relationships with students and provide ongoing support throughout the school day. They work closely with students to support their emotional well-being, help them regulate their emotions, develop positive relationships, and engage successfully in learning.
Our Pastoral Teaching Assistants can also deliver a range of interventions to support both emotional well-being and learning. These interventions are tailored to meet individual needs and help students develop the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
Pastoral support extends beyond the classroom. Our team works closely with families and understands the importance of strong home-school communication. Daily contact with parents and carers is an important part of this role, ensuring families are kept informed about their child’s day, achievements, and any support that may be needed.
In addition, our Pastoral Teaching Assistants are available to offer guidance, advice, and practical support to families whenever required. By working together, we can ensure that every child receives the care, encouragement, and support they need to achieve their full potential.
At Millgate School, we believe that positive relationships, effective communication, and a nurturing approach help every child feel valued, supported, and ready to learn.
Wellbeing at Millgate School
At Millgate School, the well-being of our students is at the centre of everything we do. We recognise that positive emotional wellbeing is essential for children and young people to learn, develop healthy relationships, build resilience, and achieve their full potential.
We believe that well-being is not something that is supported only when difficulties arise; it is something that should be nurtured and developed every day. Our aim is to help students understand what wellbeing means, why it is important, and how they can look after their own emotional and mental health both now and in the future.
Well-being is embedded throughout school life. Our teachers create safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environments where students feel valued, respected, and able to succeed. Through our curriculum, daily interactions, and enrichment opportunities, we help students develop self-awareness, emotional literacy, confidence, independence, and positive coping strategies.
Students are supported by a dedicated team of professionals, including teachers, Pastoral Teaching Assistants, and our Positive Behaviour Support Team. Together, they provide guidance, encouragement, and personalised support to help students overcome challenges and celebrate successes.
Where additional support is needed, students may access targeted interventions designed to support emotional well-being, social skills, self-esteem, emotional regulation, resilience, and mental health. These interventions are tailored to individual needs and help students develop skills that will support them both within school and throughout their lives.
We understand that supporting wellbeing is most effective when schools and families work together. Our team is committed to building strong relationships with parents and carers, offering advice, guidance, and support whenever needed. We aim to empower families with the knowledge and resources that can help promote positive well-being at home as well as at school.
At Millgate School, we are committed to preparing our students not only for success in education but also for life beyond school. By promoting positive wellbeing, developing resilience, and teaching lifelong skills, we help our young people become confident, capable individuals who are equipped to navigate the opportunities and challenges of the future.
Emotional Regulation at Millgate School
At Millgate School, we understand that many of our students can, at times, find it difficult to self-regulate their emotions, behaviours, and responses to situations around them. Developing self-regulation is an important life skill that helps children and young people manage challenges, build positive relationships, engage in learning, and develop independence both in school and beyond.
We believe that self-regulation is a skill that can be taught, practised, and strengthened over time. Our aim is to help students develop a greater understanding of their emotions, recognise how they are feeling, and learn strategies that support them to regulate effectively.
To support this, we provide a range of interventions that help students understand emotional well-being in themselves and others. These interventions focus on developing emotional literacy, resilience, self-awareness, communication skills, and positive coping strategies.
As a school, we use the Zones of Regulation framework to help students identify, understand, and communicate their emotions. This consistent approach provides students with a shared language for discussing feelings and supports them in developing strategies to manage their emotions successfully.
We recognise that every student is unique and that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to regulation. What works for one student may not work for another. Therefore, we work closely with students, families, and professionals to understand each young person’s individual regulation needs and preferences. These strategies are documented within the student’s Positive Behaviour Support Plan, ensuring that all staff can provide consistent and effective support.
To further support emotional regulation, Millgate School has four dedicated Regulation Rooms available throughout the school. These safe and supportive spaces allow students to access the tools, resources, and support they need when they are finding it difficult to regulate within the classroom environment.
In addition to our indoor spaces, we are fortunate to have a range of outdoor resources that support regulation and wellbeing. Students can access outdoor areas, swings, and our climbing wall, which provide opportunities for movement, sensory regulation, physical activity, and emotional reset. We understand that for some students, physical activity and outdoor experiences can be highly effective ways of supporting regulation and wellbeing.
By teaching self-regulation skills, providing supportive environments, and recognising individual needs, we aim to equip our students with lifelong strategies that will help them succeed not only during their time at Millgate School but throughout their future lives.
