Eco Schools

Welcome to the Eco-Council of the Millgate Eco-Warriors

At Millgate School, we are committed to creating a more environmentally sustainable community where pupils develop an appreciation for the natural world and act responsibly towards the environment. To support this vision, we have established an Eco-Committee and developed a structured action plan for the academic year.

The Eco-Committee meets once every half term to discuss priority areas and plan meaningful actions. This year, our focus has been on three key themes: school grounds, biodiversity, and global citizenship. Alongside these initiatives, we actively promote environmental awareness across the wider school community.

Key Achievements and Activities

June 2025 – Eco Factor Award and Green Flag with Distinction

Millgate School proudly received the School Eco Factor Award, presented by Co-op at the Leicester City Council Eco Schools Celebration. This recognised the commitment and impact of our students’ environmental work. We were also awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction, celebrating our high standards in sustainability.

July 2025 – ‘Grow Your Own Grub’ Competition

Students designed a Mexican-themed menu and grew their own ingredients as part of a Leicester City Council project. Developed through Eco Club and Eco-Committee sessions, our entry in the Mealbarrow Competition achieved 3rd place in both the public vote and menu design categories.

Autumn 2025 – Millgate Meadow Project

Work continued on developing the Millgate Meadow; however, the project was temporarily postponed due to building works on site.

November 2025 – Eco Roadshow

We hosted an Eco Roadshow for three local primary schools. Our secondary students led workshops on biodiversity, eco-literacy, and animal care, demonstrating excellent leadership and environmental understanding.

December 2025 – Good Life Schools Project

Millgate joined the Good Life Schools Project, exploring the impact of consumerism and digital lifestyles. This has supported the ongoing development of our sensory garden.

May 2026 – Eco Committee Takeover Day

Students took the lead in organising and delivering eco-themed activities across the school, promoting engagement and ownership of sustainability initiatives.

June 2026 – Young Marketeers Project and Good Life Schools Celebration

Students have grown plants to sell at a local market, with proceeds donated to the Leicester charity Open Hands, supporting people experiencing homelessness. We also celebrated our Good Life Schools achievements at the National Space Centre.

Ongoing Commitment

This academic year, Millgate School is working towards reapplying for the Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation, aiming once again to achieve a Green Flag with Distinction. This award recognises and celebrates the sustained environmental efforts of our pupils and staff.
